How Desert Skis Are Built
Desert Skis are handcrafted in small seasonal batches at our factory in Jindabyne, NSW. We are a small team (2 + occasional friends), and we build skis the way we think they should be built: carefully, deliberately, and only at the time of year when we can give them our full attention. That means we don't build year-round and we hold minimum stock. Every pair is made to order as part of a rotating batch production run.
Why We Work This Way
Did I say we are a small crew? During winter, we run our ski demo operation out of the factory, and yes, we're out skiing too. That's when we connect with community, test our designs, and remember why we do this. The rest of the year, we build.
OUR BUILD SCHEDULE
We build in focused batches outside of the Southern Winter season, with production typically taking around 12 weeks from confirmed order to completion.
APRIL 1ST DEADLINE
We take orders year-round. What changes is when you'll receive your skis.
Order by April 1: Your skis will be built in this year's batch and delivered before the coming winter.
Order after April 1: You're more than welcome to order, and we'd love to have you in the next batch. Your skis will be built in the following season's run and delivered the winter after next.
We know that's a longer wait than most people expect, and we'd rather be upfront about it than overpromise. If you're ordering in April, May, or June and hoping to ski on your new pair this coming season, reach out first. We'll tell you honestly whether there's any chance we can fit you in, but in most cases the answer is that you'll be riding them the following year.
The upside: if you order off-season, you lock in your spot early for next year's batch, you can still take advantage of Early Bird pricing when that window opens in September, and you'll have plenty of time to demo a pair at our factory rentals this winter to dial in exactly what you want.
August 31st Deadline
Order by August 31: Your skis will be built at the end of Southern Winter in time for Northern Winter ski antics.
Order after August 31: Your skis will be built in time for the following Southern Winter.
If you have overseas travel plans and want a pair of fatties (or skinnies...) make sure to get an order in before the end of August. This allows us plenty of time to get started on your build and have them ready for you to take wherever you are headed.
Variable, Transparent Pricing
Our pricing shifts with the build calendar. The earlier you order, the less you pay. It's that simple.
We do this for a practical reason: early orders help us plan materials, schedule the build season, and keep the whole operation running smoothly. Rewarding customers who plan ahead just feels like the fair way to do it.
